The Monumental Sasseto Wood is a fascinating and beautiful forest located near the town of Torre Alfina in the Lazio region, close to Viterbo. Tucked just below the Castle of Torre Alfina, a concealed pathway unveils this woodland gem, boasting unparalleled forest diversity within the Lazio region. The forest derives its name from the numerous lava boulders that trace their origins to an ancient volcano. Among these boulders, centuries-old trees have flourished, reaching towering heights of over 25 meters and boasting diameters exceeding a meter. The forest exudes a distinct atmosphere, characterized by the twisted forms of its trees, large trunks strewn across the ground, the lush coat of mosses and ferns, and a rich undergrowth. So enamored was he that he chose to make it his final abode, erecting a neo-Gothic mausoleum in a clearing nestled within the forest. The mausoleum, crafted by the Sienese architect Giuseppe Partini, was conceived concurrently with the castle’s renovation. During the same period, the gardens and woodland pathways were envisioned by French landscape designers Henry and Achille Duchêne.
