The Restoration During the 1960s
The history of the artistic community of Bussana begins with the ceramist Mario Giani, aka Clizia. After visiting the completely uninhabited village, he decided to found an international community of artists, equipped with a statute – a sort of little Constitution – aimed at regulating social relations between members. The buildings of Bussana were available to the community, it was not possible to claim ownership but only to use them for carrying out artistic activities. If a building was not used for three years, it returned to the community who would arrange for a subsequent assignment. Furthermore, it was forbidden to sell the products of one’s work.
In those years, the village was in a situation of complete abandonment, totally devoid of urban infrastructure – water, electricity, telephone, sewerage – but soon it began to live again. Artisans and artists from Italy and Europe began restoration work, respecting the medieval urban structure of the village – the materials used for the reconstruction were tiles, stones, and bricks recovered from the rubble.
